Made
her Broadway debut at age 22 originating the role of Anytime Annie in
the Tony Award winning blockbuster hit 42nd Street directed
and choreographed by the late great Gower Champion. She also played the
lead role of Peggy Sawyer in that same production. Born and raised in
Pittsburgh, Karen began dancing at age 4 and became one of the first members
of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater at age 10. She also studied diligently
with Mario Melodia and Carol Knight going on to become the prodigy of
famed tap dance artist Paul Draper and is the only dancer ever to acquire
the rights to Mr. Drapers original choreography to Morton Gould's Tap
Dance Concerto. The Kenley Players was Karen's
first professional job at age 15 where she worked with such stars as Gene
Kelly, Ann Miller, Mickey Rooney and many more. Her film credits include
A Chorus Line with Michael Douglas and Tap
with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis, Jr. International tours include My
One and Only with Tommy Tune and 42nd
St. where she recreated her role of Anytime Annie. Other Broadway
credits include Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Karen's most
exciting performance experience to date was her appearance at Carnegie
Hall in New York CIty in All the Worlds a Stage directed
by Tony Award winner Thommie Walsh and accompanied by a 64 piece symphony
orchestra.
Karen's teaching
experience began in 1977 when she was assistant to Joe Tremaine at the
Dance Educators of America Convention. Later she toured as a Faculty member
with Tremaine Conventions. In addition, Karen has taught for Dance Caravan,
Dance Masters of America, and Dance Olympus. In New York City, Karen taught
for Famed VOP expert Frank Hatchett, Steps, New Dance Group, and was on
the Faculty at Broadway Dance Center.
