Congratulations again on an exceptional, professional production. Your students were terrific with outstanding teaching evident accompanied by the fabulous 'production values' of the event itself. I certainly commend you and your entire staff, and will not hesitate to recommend that WA students interested in performing arts training and enrichment contact your studio.

Our daughter has been to every big name (and not so big) theater and dance school in the city. She was frustrated by the slow pace of training  and emphasis on conformity.  As she developed her talents she found that she simply did not fit in. Finally, ready to give up on a theater school and ready to work only with her private voice, piano, and acting instructors and take separate dance class, she tried some classes at Broadway Dance Studio. She felt so welcome, challenged and fulfilled. All of the teachers are so passionate and professional. They really invest in the development of each student, taking them to the full height of their current creative ability and beyond.  This is not just another dance or theater school. It is a life lesson in what it takes to be a successful professional.

The Very Best Money Can Buy.

First of all this is from my heart I am not a paid endorser.

I want to speak to all parents who go without or struggle to pay for the performing arts classes their children take. The parents of the children who love to dance, to act and to sing. If you are trying to decide on a studio or thinking of changing studios, please consider BDS.

There is no pressure to join groups or companies or do solos. Your child isn’t ignored if you don’t take every class available. BDS is a Studio with a

tremendously talented caring group of teachers who will work with your child at their level. If you have the child that wants to peruse a career in theater there is NO BETTER studio in the area.  If your child just wants to dance as an extracurricular

activity there is NO BETTER studio in the area.

I am that parent and I know what it is like to want the child you love to have every opportunity to succeed or to enjoy what they are doing.

Go visit the studio, talk to Karen and her staff. Tell them Dee sent you.

I started at BDS 4 years ago. Prior to that, I had been dancing for 9 years with a studio that had very little training available in voice and acting. I wanted more Musical Theater training and my Studio just didn’t offer it. It was extremely hard making the change, but it was the best decision I ever made.

BDS has provided me with fantastic training in dance, theater and voice.  For 4 years I have had the opportunity to work with the area’s best.  Tap, classical tap, ballet, hip hop, acting, Master classes, Summer Intensives and classes with performers from the Broadway Connection.  Ms Karen and her staff have helped me not only to grow as a performer technically, but they have helped me gain the confidence I needed to promote myself.

I am leaving them to attend college; I have been accepted to Point Park’s Conservatory of Performing Arts as a triple threat with an artistic scholarship. Please believe when I say there is no better place to learn the performing arts than at BDS. I will miss Ms. Karen, Ms Lenora, Kailyn and Brian more than I can ever explain, and if I ever get that Tony Award, they will be at the top of my thank you list.

I love you all very much.

It really was a great show.  I want to thank you and your team for doing such a wonderful job.  Ryan is so comfortable (in a good way) and happy at BDS and his progress has been great in this first year of dance.

Thank you again!  Keelie

On Stage: From Broadway to Pittsburgh

It’s that time of year when local dance studios unveil the fruits of their labors. When I can schedule it, I like to visit a couple of new locations to better assess the quality and quantity of the Pittsburgh area dance scene. After all, I still assert that local dance studios are Pittsburgh’s hidden treasure.

The first I was able to attend this year was Karen Prunzik’s Broadway Dance Studio recital at West Allegheny High School. Karen has strong Broadway roots (“42nd Street,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”) and plays to her strengths, as does staff member and Pittsburgh theater icon Lenora Nemetz (“Cabaret,” “Chicago,” “Gypsy”).

Students at BDS volunteer to be in the recital and all rehearsals are conducted outside of technique classes. Led by Karen, the staff sets up a theme, this year called “Lights! Camera! Action!,” and produces a night of entertainment that includes theatrical sketches, song and, of course, dance.

“Lights!” focused on the history of film, though, and it was a choice extravaganza. The students actually participated in a history lesson, from Mack Sennett to Ann Miller and . As for me, I was delighted to see actual film clips — “42nd Street,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “American in Paris” among them.

Karen also showed Gene Kelly’s acceptance speech at the American Film Institute, where he said he wanted to be a Pittsburgh Pirate baseball player — a real slice of local dance history!

The tap numbers, in particular were, well, tip top. Two of her students, Natalie Sciulli and Gabriela Zueckero (only 11 years old!) took off on a Fred Astaire and  Eleanor Powell number, “Begin the Beguine” from “Broadway Melody of 1940.” The duo was spot on the original choreography, echoing each other in swift succession.

Karen and friends also took the Mack Sennett idea to another level with a silent movie based on a Keystone Kops scenario and filmed on local train tracks.

All I can say is that I was continually intrigued by the inventiveness of the show. Karen and company bring a real sense of professionalism and dedication to the Pittsburgh dance school scene.

Karen,
What an awesome job on the Christmas show last night! I was so impressed! From the young lady that came back (Alyson Young) to the young black lady with a TON of pizazz and smiles and energy to little Chloe Kehm who sang Baby It's Cold Outside, it was an energetic, festive, and creative performance! The little ones coming out of the boxes, the awesome singing, the cast as a whole and the little ones and the Rockettes -- it was the ticket for setting the stage for Christmas. Just wanted to tell you what a wonderful job it was and how much we all enjoyed the performance!

Merry Christmas!
